I have always been nervous to try my hand at making my own hamburger buns. But to be honest I was sick of paying high prices for premium buns so decided to give it a shot. I’m so glad I did and anytime we are out of hamburger buns, I can whip them up in about 40 minutes. There’s so many varieties you can make just by adding different toppings to the buns. I didn’t think we had sesame seeds on hand but we did. So I used Everything but the Bagel seasoning and man was it yummy!! I also used my mixer and dough hook to make this, but you can do it by hand if you don’t have a mixer. It’s just a lot more work and I love my dough hook!
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/3 cup oil
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tsp salt
- 4+ cups flour
Making Your Hamburger Buns
- To start with, add your yeast, warm water, oil and sugar to your mixing bowl. Let this sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add in your egg and make sure to stir this in. Then start adding flour. I started with 3 cups and worked my way up.
- Using your dough hook, mix on low speed. This is where you’ll add in the extra flour if your dough is still too sticky.
- We are not rising this, so take your dough directly from your bowl, and divide it into 8-10 individual pieces. Form these into a ball.
- Place your dough balls on a baking sheet and cover with a towel for 10 minutes.
- To make an egg wash, take an egg yolk and 1 tbsp of water and mix together. Brush this on top of your buns before baking and add your everything but the bagel seasoning.
- Bake at 400 degrees for 10-20 minutes until tops start to turn golden in color.
- Cut in half and top with burger and toppings of your choice.
I still can’t believe hamburger buns are this easy to make!! And with no rise time, you could whip these up 40 minutes before dinner is ready and have fresh buns!
