I can never get my shelves to look just right. They either look cluttered or bare. I took some time to revisit my farmhouse shelving I built in our kitchen nook and add a few pieces I snagged from around the house and a few white houses I bought from the Target dollar spot. I am asked all the time about this shelf, so I thought I’d give you all a quick tutorial on how I built it myself as well as a look around at how I styled them!
Because I felt this shelf was too cluttered, I knew I needed to narrow down my decor pieces to one or two colors. That way everything would blend together and look as if it was meant to be displayed as one. I chose to include whites and wood textures on my farmhouse shelving. Now onto the important part, the tutorial!
Farmhouse Shelving Tutorial
Now, I usually try to keep my DIY projects within the budget and pass the savings ideas onto you all, but I am warning you, this pipe shelving is not cheap. I wanted the industrial style, so I splurged on the farmhouse shelving.

Step One
Grab your floor flanges and your 8″ nipples. Screw each nipple into a floor flange.
Step Two
Next, take (4) of the pieces you just put together, and screw a 1/2″ tee onto the opposite end.
Take the other (4) pieces you just put together, and screw a 1/2″ elbow onto the opposite end.
Step Three
You will have (2) separate pieces when you are done. Take (2) of your completed pieces with a flange and tee, and (2) of your completed pieces with a flange and elbow, and screw them together. Make sure you completed pieces with an elbow are on the top and bottom, and the completed pieces with a tee are in the middle. Do the same with the remaining (4) pieces.
Step Four
Hang your (2) completed pieces on the wall. Make sure these are either in studs or hung with drywall anchors because this is a very heavy shelf. However far apart you hang these pieces, is how long you will want to cut your board, plus a few inches for overhang. I hung mine a little less than 3 feet apart so that I was able to cut each of my boards to 3 feet in length.
Step Five
Cut your boards to length, and set them on the pipes for shelves.
Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures of the process of building this industrial farmhouse shelving but the pictures should help make it self explanatory. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try building your own configuration! We also used these plumbing pipes to create an entertainment center that fit our living room area perfectly. These shelves are customizable for any size space!
I just love the industrial look, especially in our old farmhouse! What do you all think of our farmhouse shelving?
